George's Monthly Update - Mar 2010

At the beginning of March we held the last of our outdoor Frostbite Shoots for this season.
They certainly have lived up to their name this year, but we have enjoyed them in spite of the conditions. Best scores during the series were by Toby Geffryes [recurve], David Reeves [barebow], David Orwin and Susan Stankovic [compound], George Brown [longbow] and Daniel Gamble [junior].

Most improved performances were by Michael Smith and Brian Palfreyman.

Last weekend Fred Kirkham took his longbow to a charity field shoot organised by Long Eaton Field Archers, at Lount, and had a good day, coming third on what proved to be a very demanding course, especially in the woodland section.

We held our club indoor Championship on the last club night before Easter, when thirty members took part. Winners were Julie Bancroft and Toby Geffryes [recurve], Mark Leonardi-Bee [barebow], Susan Stankovic and David Orwin [compound], Rebecca Kirkham and George Brown [longbow], Reece Buckland, Ellie Drabble, Jack Atkinson, William Leonardi-Bee and Ashley Buckland [juniors].

The other highlight this month was a seminar organised by Mario Stankovic for our winter training squad. Sports Psychologist and Senior Coach Alistair Whittingham came to us in between coaching national teams in Slovenia and Sweden. His talk on "Performance Archery" was attended by over forty archers from our club and from Trent University, and afterwards, five of our archers, who had shot well in the championships two days before, has a coaching session with Alistair. Talking to them afterwards revealed just what an experience that was!  Thanks to Mario for setting up the event.

Now that the clocks have gone forward we move outside. Our Beginners' Course is under way and another "generation" of archers will soon be joining us to enjoy outdoor shooting throughout the summer.
